چکیده

Body-bar frameworks provide a special class of frameworks which are well understood generically, with a full combinatorial theory for rigidity. Given a symmetric body-bar framework, this paper exploits group representation theory to provide necessary conditions for rigidity in the form of very simply stated restrictions on the numbers of those structural components that are unshifted by the symmetry operations of the framework. We give some initial results, and conjectures, for when these conditions are also sufficient for rigidity. ∗supported by the DFG Research Unit 565 ‘Polyhedral Surfaces’ †supported by a grant from NSERC (Canada)

Symmetric Isostatic Frameworks with ℓ1 or ℓ∞ Distance Constraints

Combinatorial characterisations of minimal rigidity are obtained for symmetric 2-dimensional bar-joint frameworks with either `1 or `∞ distance constraints. The characterisations are expressed in terms of symmetric tree packings and the number of edges fixed by the symmetry operations. The proof uses new Henneberg-type inductive construction schemes.

Symmetric Versions of Laman's Theorem

Recent work has shown that if an isostatic bar and joint framework possesses non-trivial symmetries, then it must satisfy some very simply stated restrictions on the number of joints and bars that are ‘fixed’ by various symmetry operations of the framework. For the group C3 which describes 3-fold rotational symmetry in the plane, we verify the conjecture proposed in [4] that these restrictions ...

When is a symmetric pin-jointed framework isostatic?

Maxwell’s rule from 1864 gives a necessary condition for a framework to be isostatic in 2D or in 3D. Given a framework with point group symmetry, group representation theory is exploited to provide further necessary conditions. This paper shows how, for an isostatic framework, these conditions imply very simply stated restrictions on the numbers of those structural components that are unshifted...

Symmetric Laman theorems for the groups

For a bar and joint framework (G, p) with point group C3 which describes 3-fold rotational symmetry in the plane, it was recently shown in (Schulze, Discret. Comp. Geom. 44:946-972) that the standard Laman conditions, together with the condition derived in (Connelly et al., Int. J. Solids Struct. 46:762-773) that no vertices are fixed by the automorphism corresponding to the 3-fold rotation (ge...
